Yogurt, Coffee, and Sushi—the Fast Food Diet for Hipsters
Article

You’ve all seen them. The college students in their early twenties who lurk in the dimly lit corners of coffee shops with their MacBooks, sipping cappuccinos and listening to indie music. Recently they’ve broadened their horizons to include sushi bars and frozen yogurt joints.

These small shops have been popping up all over, but are especially popular in the city, where they can maintain a constant customer base. Most have quirky names that are quick to catch your attention, and their food keeps the customers coming back.

A newcomer to the Salt Lake Valley is Sushi Groove, a modern sushi joint just beckoning to all frequenters of the hipster diet. Aside from the fantastic food, they often have local DJs spinning some tunes and adding to the flavor. Free WiFi is another perk Sushi Groove has to offer, being especially scrumptious to the Internet savvy.

Other quaint eateries in the Salt Lake Valley include Lanta’s FroZone, Yoway Yogurt, and Coffee Connection. All of these restaurants serve delicious food and beverages, but are they really the healthiest choices?

These places cater to the college student on the go, the social networker, and the indie music fan all at the same time. Their modern atmospheres and personable employees draw quite the crowd. The only apparent problem is their nutritional value.

Many people would be surprised to learn that their French vanilla frappe with whipped cream and syrup has more calories than a slice of cake. Frozen yogurt topped with delectable treats can be more fattening than a dish of ice cream. Sushi may appear a low fat food, but the calories add up fast when you’re having more than one or two rolls.

Foods like these are often advertised as a healthier alternative, but that is often not the case. It is important to consume them in moderation, and to not always opt for those extra sprinkles.

A diet consisting of frozen desserts, caffeine, and raw fish might not agree with your digestive system. However, many people can’t resist the flavors and ambiance of these avant-garde restaurants, and so the hipster fast food diet will live on.
